University of Oulu (UOULU) is a multidisciplinary university with 14 000 students and almost 4000 employees located in the north of Finland. UOULU has eight faculties which range from humanities and medicine to business, science and technology. The structure of UOULU and its wide collaboration network allows it to build multidisciplinary projects, conduct high level research and contribute to solving global challenges in the following focus areas: Mitigating climate change and safeguarding biodiversity, A resilient and secure society, Digitalisation, artificial intelligence and data at the service of humanity and Human health and well-being.
UOULU has a proven track record of participating in the EU Framework programmes throughout their evolution since FP4. In the Horizon 2020 programme, UOULU had altogether 117 approved projects. 26 of these projects were coordinated by UOULU. In the Horizon Europe programme, UOULU has won already 118 projects with almost 69 M€, and is the number one HEI in Finland in Pillar II. UOULU provides higher education and research along the value chain, from exploration to extraction, processing, recycling, business development, material sciences (incl. battery minerals, industrial side streams), environmental sciences, civil engineering, and social sciences. The spearhead is the University’s Oulu Mining School. UOULU is contributing to the future of sustainable and responsible mineral resourcing. UOULU coordinates more than a dozen EU projects within the field.
UOULU representatives are actively participating in numerous national and European platforms contributing to the development of future policies and practices.
